Joel Merriman, M.S.

Principal

Joel’s love of wildlife started in childhood and ultimately motivated him to pursue multiple degrees to learn the practice of wildlife conservation.

Joel’s professional career started as an ecological consultant in the Great Pacific Northwest, where he conducted wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, wetland delineations, and developed habitat restoration plans. This work was largely conducted in the context of land use planning and regulatory compliance, giving him a strong foundation in impact assessment and mitigation planning.

Joel eventually made his way to his current home in Washington, DC, where he began the next phase of his career in the eNGO world. He helped initiate a new international conservation program at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, then developed conservation and public engagement programs for corporate properties at Wildlife Habitat Council. More recently, Joel worked with the policy and advocacy team at American Bird Conservancy as their wind energy program director.

Joel is also actively involved in conservation at the local level. He was involved with DC’s volunteer-run Audubon chapter for many years, serving at different times as Vice President, board member, and chair of the conservation & advocacy committee. Joel was particularly involved with local land use planning efforts, working to ensure that birds and their habitat were considered in managing local green spaces.

When Joel is not working, he enjoys spending time with his kids, hiking, travel, watching tennis, playing the guitar, and of course, birding.
